AECI achieves significant reductions

AECI will continue to improve air quality

Associated Electric Cooperative has a strong history of fulfilling its environmental commitments while continuing to meet members’ needs for an economical, reliable power supply. The cooperative has reduced its systemwide sulfur dioxide emissions rate 90 percent since 1994. Its nitrogen oxides emissions rate during the 2007 ozone season was 80 percent below the 1994 annual rate at its coal-based units.

AECI continues to improve air quality. Construction began in 2006 on a plan to reduce emissions further and meet the Clean Air Interstate Rule. When complete Jan. 1, 2009, the projects will reduce AECI’s NOx emissions rate systemwide almost 90 percent below 1994 levels.

The chart above shows Associated’s annual emissions rates for the New Madrid and Thomas Hill coal units only.

*CAIR requires reductions of nitrogen oxides in 2009 and sulfur dioxide emissions in 2010.
