Ready to work for an award-winning organization?
Meet Shawn, the mojo behind our mission
Chief Human Resources Officer Shawn Calhoun says the cooperative world is one of the best-kept secrets. It’s a world that provides stability, yet you work in a changing and challenging industry with mission-focused co-workers. “Our organization really does have a mission that matters, and I wanted to work for a company that still did something good for people. I like the fact that we serve rural America, which often is overlooked. Our history … it’s a powerful story.”
Shawn’s own story includes 10 years with Associated, plus 24 years’ prior experience in human resources, leadership development, talent acquisition, change management, labor relations, succession planning and organizational assessment.
Associated’s culture continues to appeal to Shawn. “You just can’t beat the culture. I do think people genuinely care about each other and care about their communities. From an HR perspective, we’re fair to the employee. We’re doing the right thing by the employee and the member, … and that shows in our low turnover rates and strong engagement scores.”

Dubbed 'The Machine'
In his first annual report following taking the helm at Associated in 2016, CEO and General Manager David Tudor wrote: "I have nicknamed Associated 'The Machine,' largely due to the fact that the cooperative's people, processes and procedures are so strong and support a diverse and flexible set of generation and transmission assets. The daily coordination between the organization's leadership and employees is simply excellent."
